Consumer Alert
Beware of scammers using Google paid-for ads, YP.com ads. These advertisers are using the age-old “bait & switch scam”. They are easy to spot since they advertise a low service fee and fast response times (typically $30 or less and/or 15 minutes). When the scammer shows up an hour or more later, he will tell the customer that the service fee only covers the cost of booking the call. Typically, they will instance charge $150 to $250 to unlock a car. These individuals are not locksmiths, nor do they have the proper training and tools to unlock cars, homes, or to provide any other locksmith service.
TIP: Searching with a mobile device using “local locksmiths” yields scammers using a local telephone number and local address, but when contacted, consumers are connected to a call center in another city.
Consumers who have hired these companies report that they have been overcharged for products and services, received bad advice or poor workmanship, or have had difficulty contacting the business to correct problems.
TIP: Don’t just pick the first “local” company you find online. Avoid the paid-for ads. Confirm the company address and ask for the legal name of the business. When the locksmith arrives, ask for identification, a business card and their license. Make sure they are licensed, bonded & insured so you know costs will be covered should any damage be done to your personal property.
