Electronic Lock

Are you always forgetting your house keys or tired of lugging them around in your pocket?

Maybe you just got back from the grocery store, hands full, and you forgot to take your key out of your pocket or bag. Setting down all of your purchases to dig around for a key can become clumsy and annoying.

Good news! Electronic locks and deadbolts are extremely convenient, highly secure option for your home.

These electronic locks can be battery or bluetooth operated, and typically run off a code to give you access. Worried an electronic lock will die and lock you out? Fear not! The locks will warn you when the battery is getting low, allowing you to change them before you encounter any issues. They also typically have a secondary key entry or a way to override them, in case the battery dies unexpectedly or experiences a glitch, such as from bad weather.

Why switch to an electronic lock for my home?

There are many reasons why someone would choose to make the transition from physical house locks and keys to handsfree or electronic locks:

  • Convenience: As described in the scenario above, it can become frustrating to dig around for a key, especially when your hands are full. Electronic locks that connect to a cellular phone can also ensure that you do not get locked out after misplacing a key, since there is no physical key needed to open the lock.
  • Security: Not sure if you locked your door on your way out? No problem. Some electronic locks connect to an app, allowing you to check the status of each lock and even lock and unlock doors from a distance.
  • Ease of Use: Unlike with physical key locks, electronic locks give you the ability to change the password in a matter of minutes. Though giving this password away should only be restricted to family or close friends, electronic locks make this whole ordeal much easier. Imagine this: Your best friend is coming into town to house sit while you are away on vacation. Instead of hiding the key under the planter or welcome mat, exposing your home to possible burglaries, you can now simply call or text them to tell them the code to get into your home. No stress, no hassle!
  • Child Safety: Maybe your child is coming home from school, and you are stuck working late that day. Installing electronic locks can make sure that there is no possibility of your child losing their key and getting locked out.
  • Longevity: The reason most traditional locks get worn down is due to the wear and tear of constantly inserting and turning a physical key. There is also little to no chance of a key breaking off inside of the lock.

FAQs

How are electronic locks powered?

Electronic locks are powered in one of two ways, depending on the lock itself: they are either battery powered, or they operate on an electrical current.

How do I get into my home if my electronic lock battery dies?

Most electronic locks come with a ‘low battery’ indicator. However, if your lock has completely lost power, you can replace the battery yourself! In most electronic locks, the battery is housed behind the front panel, and removing this panel using a screwdriver will give you access to this part of the lock. From there, replace the battery with the proper size and voltage, and you’re good to go!

My home lost power and my electronic lock isn’t working. What do I do?

When the power goes out, the only functionality your lock will lose is being able to be controlled remotely. This means you can still use your key to lock and unlock the door, and if your lock is battery powered, the keypad would still function.
