Winter is finally over in Rochester. That means it’s time for some spring cleaning. As you replace the storm windows and doors with screens, don’t forget to check out your doors and door hardware. Western New York winters can really take a toll on your external doors and locks. Between the extreme cold, snow and ice, and the salt and other deicing products, your doors can suddenly become difficult to operate. Take a few minutes to evaluate each door and lock. Open and close the door, making sure to lock and unlock it. Does everything operate smoothly or do you have to wiggle and jiggle the lock or door?
It pays to identify and address minor issues before they become major problems. If caught early enough, you may be able to fix it yourself. Sometimes all it takes is simply tightening the screws on the lock, strike plate and hinges. If you get it go, however, you may find yourself unable to unlock your door.
