How many previous tenants/owners, contractors, maids, house/dog sitters, etc. have the key to your home?
It is SO important to get your home re-keyed. Not only is it DANGEROUS for your family, but check out the article below about how insurances handle you not re-keying your home.
Failure to re-key or change the locks on your home can lead to insurance claim problems.
As locksmiths, we often deal with physical security concerns. In doing so, we become aware of the complicated interaction between security and insurance matters. If you fail to re-key your new home and then find many of your belongings missing, it may not be a simple matter of making a claim on your insurance! This would be considered a ‘suspicious’ claim because there are no signs of forced entry (because it was some prior owner, user, maintenance person, maid, home health care worker etc. that had a working KEY!) Aside from giving your new house a fresh set of keys, nowadays, most insurance companies are already requiring that if you have a new house then you must re-key the locks before you can obtain full insurance coverage on your property and the contents within it.
Re-keying the home doesn’t fix all of those problems, but it certainly would deter the would be thieves and add the element of forced entry into the equation for the insurance investigators who are very good at forensically examining the situation to see if fraud is involved.
If you haven’t had a home security audit, please give us a call.
We will do everything in our power to ensure your family’s safety.
